Pandel Savic recounts his 'wonderful run at life'

Pandel Savic’s life sounds like something from a TV miniseries: An immigrant child grows up to become a Marine Corps veteran of World War II; quarterbacks the Ohio State University football team to its first Rose Bowl victory; and, along with Jack Nicklaus and others, helps build Muirfield Village Golf Club and create the Memorial Tournament.

Which is why, as Savic’s memory began to falter, his family acted to ensure that those experiences wouldn't be lost.

The result is the recently released book “A Wonderful Run at Life, The Stories of Pandel Savic,” published by Orange Frazer Press in Wilmington.

The book is an autobiography, as told to Don Lewis, whose wife, Sally, is the oldest of Savic’s three children.

The project originated about four years ago, Lewis said, not long after Savic learned that he has Alzheimer’s disease.

The two began having marathon talks about various aspects of Savic’s life.
